The first place Royals are no more.
Jaylon Thompson writes that Salvador Perez joined the 250 home run club over the weekend.
On Saturday, Perez added to his illustrious Royals career. He became the 12th primary catcher to hit 250 career home runs. The exclusive list includes Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, Yogi Berra, Garry Carter and Mike Piazza…
“It’s super exciting, especially for the win,” Perez said. “As a player we still have some personal goals. Thank God for keeping me in the field and letting me do what I love to do. Hopefully many more.”
The offense picked up starter Alec Marsh on Saturday.
“You know, I didn’t have my best stuff,” Marsh said. “It was clear from the get-go. But having the guys come out and bringing the sticks early kind of gave me that extra boost to go out there like, ‘We are in this. Let’s keep us in this game.’”
Chris Stratton issued four walks in the eighth inning of Sunday’s loss.
“I just wasn’t getting ahead of anybody,” Stratton said. “(They were) just kind of waiting me out there, you know, to attack the zone. Didn’t get the job done today and ruined one of Cole’s great outings.
“We have been playing really good ball lately, so I think I let our team down. But it’s just one game and I can’t wait to get to Chicago and try to go from there.”
Salvy did have to leave Sunday’s game after a play at the plate.
“Right now, we think it’s a groin strain, but we have to get more tests when we get to Chicago,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.
