The Royals rotation is banged up.
Cole Ragans experienced more groin issues on Friday, writes Jaylon Thompson.
“It tightened up there on him in the fifth inning,” Quatraro said. “So, just trying to do the right thing. Get him out of there before something happened.”
Ragans surrendered three earned runs prior to the inning. His last two fastballs thrown registered 91.4 and 89.5 mph respectively.
“I just couldn’t use my legs,” Ragans said. “It obviously affects anything rotating, the lower half and that kind of stuff.”
Michael Massey had his first start in left field.
Quatraro noted that the switch adds another layer of versatility.
“We are looking to get a bit more stability for everybody,” Quatraro said. “We have asked India and Maikel (Garcia) to bounce around quite a bit. Going back to last year, Massey’s comfort level going out there and what we saw in spring training, we think that’s a good fit for us. Any time we ask guys to move, we don’t take that lightly. We understand how selfless these guys are and that their ultimate goal is to win.”
Seth Lugo will be scratched from tonight’s start, writes Jackson Stone.
“That’s our hope,” Quatraro said when asked if Lugo will avoid time on the injured list. “We are in the very early stages of it, so we will see how he responds.”
David Lesky looks at potential trade targets for the Royals.
Dane Myers
Myers was a sixth round pick of the Tigers in 2017…as a pitcher. He shifted to the outfield and has been a position player since after the Covid year. The Marlins claimed him off waivers in December of 2022 and he got his first extended action in the big leagues last year when he hit .263/.333/.442. This year, he’s way better than that. He doesn’t walk a ton and he strikes out a bit more than you’d like, but he has enough power to keep you honest and he hits the ball hard. Plus, he can run and has rated well in center field this season. I’m not sure how sustainable it is what he’s doing, but I’m also not sure that it isn’t sustainable. He might be my new favorite target.
