John Rave hasn’t fixed the offense….yet.
J.J. Picollo discusses the promotion of John Rave.
“John did a great job in spring training and nearly made our club out of spring training,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said. “And he did what you want players to do: Go back down and just force our hand. And we thought the way he was performing, we’ve been talking about it for maybe 10 days now, but the way he was performing, continuing to do well.
“Obviously, we’re looking for a little bit of a spark in our offense, and he’s a well-rounded player, good hitter, good defender, runs the bases well. He plays the type of game that we feel like we need to play to be a winning team.”
Anne Rogers writes about Rave’s late father as a presence for his son.
Salvy discussed the struggling offense with Jaylon Thompson.
“We’ve talked a lot about it before,” Perez said. “We compete every day. We don’t want to hit like that every night as a group. But we prepare ourselves every night and we go out there and compete. …
“I know, even myself, I need to get better swings, try to help my team to win. I think it’s going to come. The pitchers are doing a pretty good job. If they continue to do that, and that combination comes, we’re going to win a lot of games.”
Anne talked to Brady Singer about coming back to Kansas City.
“There’s definitely a lot of emotions,” Singer said. “The relationships that I made, the people I got to meet. But I’m still here to do a job. Put the emotions on the backburner. Enjoy it today, but tomorrow we’re going to work to win a game.”
David Lesky writes about when we might see Jac Caglianone.
And the elephant in the room is Jac Caglianone who has had about as good of a start to his AAA career as humanly possible. He went two games without a home run and, after hitting two yesterday, he now has five in six games in AAA. Now, it’s worth noting that they played their games this week in a park that might be better to hit in than Coors Field, but his blasts are getting out pretty much anywhere. I have been told by a reliable source that talks are “intensifying” about when to bring him up. Could that mean today? Eh, maybe. But I don’t really think so. My guess is he remains in Omaha for at least another week or two, but I’m also starting to wonder if my date of June 24 is going to end up looking like I overshot it. I do think it’s worth noting that coming into play yesterday, he was still chasing at a 38.7 percent rate, which is not great, but I’m not sure how much it matters at this point.
ESPN writers discuss the pennant race as it begins Memorial Day weekend.
Rogers: Four. It’s highly doubtful the AL Central will take four teams to the playoffs, so that’s where there’s an opening for a couple of teams from outside the current wild-card standings to make it. Two of the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers will make it to the postseason along with the current three division leaders Buster listed. The question is which of the other three AL Central teams — the Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals — will join them. I think the answer is the Royals.
