It’s minor league roster shuffling season.
It’s the time of year when minor league rosters begin to shuffle a bit, moving guys up for promotions, filling out rosters to deal with injuries, and releasing or trading players to provide better career opportunities. The Royals continued to add some depth this week, acquiring infielder Diego Castillo from the New York Mets organization for cash considerations.
Castillo is a 27-year-old right-handed hitting infielder who has 101 career MLB games in parts of three seasons with the Pirates, Diamondbacks, and Twins. He received the most big league playing time in in 2022 when he appeared in 96 games with the Pirates and hit .206/.251/.382 with 11 home runs. Since then he has bounced around, shuffling between Triple-A and the big leagues. He signed a minor league deal with the Mets and hit just .167/.217/.262 with one home run in 13 games at Triple-A Syracuse.
Castillo is not to be confused with the former Rays/Mariners/Twins pitcher of the same name. This Castillo is capable of playing all over the infield and will be assigned to Triple-A Omaha. The Storm Chasers have been signing some MLB vets recently, adding veteran pitchers John Gant, Stephen Nogosek, and Trevor Richards in the last week, and the organization recently added 45-year-old lefty Rich Hill, who is currently working out in Arizona.
