Lorenzen’s lights out performance fuels Royals to 4-0 win

A series win, a winning road trip and a winning week.

Dubbed the fifth starter in the rotation, it’s been an up and down year for Michael Lorenzen. On Sunday however, Lorenzen delivered in a rubber match against the Diamondbacks.

The powerful right-hander went 7 scoreless innings, giving up 2 hits, walking one and striking out 7 Diamondbacks. It only took him 82 pitches as well.

As for the offense, outside of Salvy getting hit by a pitch in the second inning, they went down easy in the first 3 1⁄3 innings of the game. And then Bobby Witt Jr., now a 2-time All-Star selection, blasted a hanging cutter way into the seats in left center field. It was Witt’s 12th bomb on the season. After a Pasquantino out, Salvy hit a laser beam into the same part of the park as Bobby did, the 10th homer on the season for the Captain, putting the Royals up 2-0.

The top of the 5th started with Jac Caglianone getting hit on the foot, he would then steal second base, the first of his MLB career. Nick Loftin would hit an infield single off the pitcher, setting up 1st and 3rd with nobody out. John Rave would line a single into right field, putting the Royals up 3-0. Kyle Isbel would follow it up with a jam shot single into left field to put Kansas City up 4-0.

Lucas Erceg would give up an infield single but strike out a pair in the 8th. In a non-save situation, Carlos Estevez would hit a batter but allow no more. The Royals gave up just 3 hits all day in the 4-0 shutout win.

The Royals take 2 of 3 from Arizona, and had a winning road trip out west, going 4-3. They are 4-2 in the month of July after going 8-18 in the month of June. They start a 3-game series with the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, before an off-day Thursday. Then the Mets come to town next weekend to finish up before the All-Star Break.

The Royals are 43-48 on the season. A big homestand starts tomorrow, as the Royals need another winning week. Congrats to Kris Bubic and Bobby Witt Jr. on being selected to the All-Star Game!
