Latest Proposed NIL Bill Can Benefit International College Athletes – Greenspoon Marder LLP
International college athletes have been restricted from earning Name, Image, and Likeness (“NIL”) compensation with the ease of their U.S. counterparts. While American athletes can readily engage in third-party NIL deals, those on student visas (F-1) are limited to on-campus employment and therefore barred from participating in NIL deals on U.S. soil.
Why Direct Student-Athlete Payments Create An Immigration Crisis For Universities
If international student-athletes violated the terms of their F-1 visa, the consequences—visa revocation, deportation, or reentry denial—were theirs alone to bear. Universities operated largely on the sidelines, uninvolved and unaffected. The proposed House settlement, or any other legal mechanism through which direct payments could come about, however, shifts the dynamic entirely.
Royalty Income Revenue Share Payments Won’t Solve The International Student-Athlete Employment Issue

What Will College Athletic Department Revenue-Sharing Look Like?
While many administrators have publicly expressed their school’s intent to participate, most have been understandably shy on specifics. Dick’s Sporting to buy Foot Locker for $2.4 billion to fight soft demand | Reuters
Over the last few years, Foot Locker has lost market share to competition as brands such as Nike expanded their direct-to-consumer (DTC) business. Falling customer visits to malls, where most of its stores are located, have also weighed on sales.
