NEW YORK— Kansas did not leave the World’s Most Famous Arena with the result they wanted against Duke on Tuesday.
But the hope is that they won’t have to play without their star guard Darryn Peterson, who missed the game due to a hamstring injury, for much longer.
“The cramping has subsided as of now so he’s just dealing with the tightness,” Self said after Kansas’ 78-66 loss to Duke.
Kansas is calling the injury ‘hamstring tightness’ as of now that was caused by a ‘slight hamstring strain’.
“Until that subsides he’s not going to be confident to play which has been going on for a significant amount of time,” Self said. “We actually feel good about what we are doing, they feel good about what we are doing and we don’t think it’ll be long.”
Peterson is scheduled to be re-evaluated in just under a week, but the star freshman could still miss some time after that.
He could not be available to us [for the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas],” Self said. “But we’ll just have to wait and see until after he’s evaluated.”
Peterson was as impressive as advertised before his injury, putting up 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in his first two games with the Jayhawks.
Until his return, Kansas will look to have a more balanced approach to their offense. Against Duke, three players scored in double figures including Flory Bidunga (14), Melvin Council Jr. (15) and Tre White (12).
The Jayhawks next challenge will be in the Players Era Tournament in Vegas. They take on Notre Dame on Monday, Nov. 24.
