Kansas head coach Bill Self didn’t seem happy with his Kansas State colleague Jerome Tang following the Jayhawks’ 90-68 win Lawrence on Tuesday.
After the win, Self claimed that Tang tried to blow through the customary postgame handshake line.
“He just didn’t want to shake hands, he just did a fly-by,” Self said of Tang.
Another reporter asked Self about KU big man Hunter Dickinson saying that the way the Wildcats celebrated after beating the Jayhawks at home earlier in the season left the team motivated for revenge.
“The celebration and going in the stands and stuff, we’re used to that,” Self said about Kansas State’s actions after the win on Feb. 5. “When we got our [expletive] kicked there we shook everyone’s hand and did a handshake line and all that stuff, so I guess it was different here today.”
Another wrinkle has seemingly been added to the Kansas-Kansas State rivalry, but K-State podcaster Cole Manbeck argued on X/Twitter that Self was making a big deal about nothing and had actually himself engaged in a “fly-by” after the first matchup.
“This is so stupid. It’s a non-story. It was a normal handshake line,” Manbeck wrote. “But if Bill Self wants to make it a story, here he is doing a “fly by” in Manhattan this year.”

We’ll have to see if these two rivals meet for a third time in the Big 12 Tournament next week.
