There were plenty of winners and losers to be found on the first night of the NFL Draft. But for NFL Network analyst Peter Schrager, it was actually the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs who walked away as the big-time winners.
During today’s show, Schrager made the case that the Chiefs “won” the first night of the draft because they managed to get Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who ran the fastest 40-yard dash in history at the NFL Scouting Combine two months ago. He joked that the NFL teams should be colluding to stop the Chiefs, rather than allowing them to trade up and get their guy like the Buffalo Bills did last night.
“They won the Super Bowl last year. They won the Super Bowl this year. They won the NFL Draft night day one. They add him to a team (that’s already elite),” Schrager said.
Fans have been projecting Worthy to the Chiefs ever since the fateful day at the Combine where he ran that 40-yard dash in a record-setting 4.21 seconds. Everyone knew that the team was looking for a speedy wide receiver to be their long-awaited replacement for All-Pro Tyreek Hill.
But to Schrager’s point that the Bills shouldn’t have traded with the Chiefs, many suspect that Worthy would have been available to the team if they had waited until the end of the day and drafted him 32nd overall. This way, the Bills get to add some draft capital without changing the board meaningfully.
Then again, maybe someone else would have made a move for Worthy and kept the Chiefs from getting their coveted speedster.
We’ll never know because the Bills let their arch-rivals in the AFC playoff picture have him.
