The Kansas City Chiefs head into the 2024 NFL season as back-to-back NFL champions and are hoping to be the first team in NFL history to three-peat as champions. But one Dallas Cowboys legend had a warning for him first.
Appearing on the Jim Rome Show, Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver and three-time Super Bowl champion Michael Irvin addressed an offseason meeting he had with Kelce at a Dallas Mavericks game. Irvin explained that the pain of falling short of reaching that threepeat in 1994 still haunts him to this day.
“I spent some time with him,” Irvin said. “He grabbed me and hugged me real tight and said, ‘Michael, tell me about that three-peat chase.’
“I said, ‘Every day, man. Every day. When I put head to pillow at night and when I wake up and put toothbrush to tooth in the morning, I think about that one that got away. I think about that ’94 championship game…’ I said to him, ‘Whatever you do, do all you can do to make that happen. … I’m telling you, if you leave anything on the table and you don’t get it, you will think about it for the rest of your life, like I do.’”
The Dallas Cowboys were two-time defending champions just like the Chiefs in 1994 after winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993. But they hit a wall in the NFC Championship Game against Steve Young and the San Francisco 49ers, losing 38-28.
Dallas would go on to win their third Super Bowl the following year, but in hindsight they were just one quarter away from a threepeat or possibly even a fourpeat.
