The Chiefs and their starting right guard got it done with about two hours to spare.

Talks persisted until about two hours before the deadline, but in the end, the two sides got it done: the Kansas City Chiefs and right guard Trey Smith have agreed to a four-year contract extension.

Multiple outlets (ESPN, Fox Sports and NFL Network) report the four-year deal is worth $94 million, with $70 million guaranteed.

Smith, 26, was a sixth-round pick by the Chiefs during the 2021 NFL Draft. Since his rookie season, he has started 67 regular-season and 13 playoff games for Kansas City. He has since started 67 regular‑season and 13 playoff games, winning two Super Bowls and earning his first Pro Bowl nod in 2024.

In late February, the Chiefs franchise tagged Smith, preventing him from hitting the open market as an unrestricted free agent. Smith would have been due $23.4 million for the 2025 season if he had played under the tag.

The new contract keeps Smith in Kansas City long‑term and makes him the highest‑paid guard in league history. The previous bar had been set by Carolina’s Robert Hunt, who signed a five-year deal worth $63 million guaranteed in March 2024.

With Smith locked up, Kansas City’s brass has maintained its hopes to pivot its attention to possible extensions for defensive end George Karlaftis and cornerback Trent McDuffie, who are both under the Chiefs’ control through 2026 thanks to the fifth-year option.
