Everything that went down during Kansas City’s fourth training camp practice in St. Joseph.
On Friday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs returned to the practice field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for the fourth full practice of the team’s 2025 training camp.
This was one of 17 sessions scheduled for the team’s practice field next to MWSU’s Spratt Stadium. 12 of the remaining practices will be open to the public — click here for details and a full schedule — while one more will be open only to the team’s Season Ticket Members.
Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there. He posted some observations on social media about a strange day.
Bit of a strange day at training camp. Plans to go inside changed, and the team practiced outside with no fans in attendance. It was overcast for most of practice with temperatures in the mid-70s.

For the fourth straight day, only the players on PUP didn’t participate.
Kansas City’s player attendance was the same all week. Only the PUP players (Kristian Fulton, Jawaan Taylor and Tre Watson) missed all four workouts, including Friday.

Here’s another thing that’s been the same for four consecutive days: the starting offensive line.
Head coach Andy Reid kept the offensive line the same all week: LT Josh Simmons, LG Kingsley Suamataia, C Creed Humphrey, RG Trey Smith, RT Jaylon Moore

But it seems that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo prefers a little more variety.
During the first three days of practice, DC Steve Spagnuolo had CB Trent McDuffie and CB Jaylen Watson outside and DB Chamarri Conner inside with the top team. On Friday, both CB Nazeeh Johnson and CB Nohl Williams mixed in outside the top team.

Pete kept track of Friday’s pecking order among the running backs.

On a rainy, sloppy day, the starting quarterback was also a little sloppy.
QB Patrick Mahomes began practice with a deep conversion to WR Tyquan Thornton, but the rest of the period seemed a bit sloppy.
From QB Gardner Minshew, TE Robert Tonyan made a one-handed catch across the middle. S Major Williams intercepted QB Bailey Zappe’s overthrow.

But as always, Mahomes made some brilliant throws, too.
In the late-practice 11-on-11 period, Mahomes floated a ball deep downfield just out of the reach of WR Hollywood Brown. He made up for it on the next play with a sidearm throw on the run as he rolled out to his left, hitting WR Rashee Rice in perfect stride.

And sometimes, defenders made plays.
Mahomes tried another deep ball down the middle of the field to WR Xavier Worthy, but Conner and CB Nohl Williams showed good coverage and ensured the play was incomplete.

A few players who are deep on the depth chart caught Pete’s eye.
With the second and third teams, WR Nikko Remigio caught a deep pass from Minshew, breaking to the right sideline. LB Cooper McDonald made a diving INT vs. QB Chris Okadokun.

The second-team defensive front had a good day.
Throughout practice, the second-team defensive front consistently overwhelmed Minshew, and I counted three or four would-be sacks. The whistle often blew before Minshew could get a pass off.

In the last 11-on-11, defenders had the edge on Mahomes.
In Mahomes’ final turn at 11-on-11, he tried another deep pass from the 50-yard line to Worthy, but it was broken up by LB Drue Tranquill (not a typo) in the end zone. CB Jaylen Watson broke up Mahomes’ final pass in 11s intended for CB Robert Tonyan.

And once again, the rookie wideout turned some heads.
In 7-on-7, Mahomes connected with WR Jalen Royals on a beautiful back-shoulder pass. Royals had an impressive week and continues to see time on the field with Mahomes and the first-team offense. Watson had another breakup in 7s on a Mahomes ball intended for TE Travis Kelce.

Later in 7s, McDuffie picked off a Mahomes ball after it looked like Thornton probably ran the wrong route. Watson completed his best practice yet with another breakup intended for Brown. With Fulton on PUP, Watson had a good week as he works to hold onto his job.

As the linemen went up against each other, Pete took note of the standouts.
OL/DL period standouts
OL: Humphrey, Moore, Smith
DL: Jones, Gillotte, Norman-Lott, Tillery— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) July 25, 2025
Norman-Lott had some fun at the podium joking about who he thinks is the toughest Chiefs OL: “Humphrey is a brick wall. No, no. I’m not laughing (as he began to laugh). Seriously.”

The two punters also have a lively competition underway.
The punter battle was front and center as Dave Toub had Matt Araiza and Eddie Czaplicki work on pooch punts. Toub gave an update on the punter battle, which we included in today’s notebook here: https://t.co/Wi7bUEQ4YF

Finally, Pete tallied up Mahomes’ targets on the day.
Mahomes targets (11-on-11): Worthy (6), Hunt (2), Kelce (2), Royals (2), Thornton (2), Tonyan (2), Brown, Gray, Rice, Wiley

After a day off on Saturday, the next practice will be Sunday at 9:15 a.m. Arrowhead Time. It will be the first session in pads. As always, we will have live updates after practice begins. When it is over, the whole team will sign autographs, while head coach Andy Reid will be among those speaking to the press.
