The Kansas City Chiefs returned to the practice fields at Missouri Western State University on Thursday for their third day of padded practices.
After brief absences, DB Juan Thornhill and WR Tyreek Hill made their returns to practice. Thornhill, who has been having a good camp so far, left practice with a groin injury on Monday. Hill, who also has been having a stellar camp, was dealing with some knee tendinitis beginning on Tuesday. The team didn’t expect Hill’s knee issue to be serious and his return to practice suggests that to be the case. He was back out there impressing in individual and team drills with his speed and route-running, even notching the first touchdown of the day.
TE Nick Keizer also returned to practice after an extended absence. He was placed on the non-football injury list to start off training camp with back spasms. He counted toward the active roster, so the team won’t need to clear roster space in his return.
Anthony Hitchens and Ben Niemann both continued to be eased back into action, with Hitchens returning to full participation after several days of limited action. Niemann remained limited during practice.
Injured during the course of practice was WR Antonio Callaway, who had to be helped to the medical tent. The training staff was looking at his left leg before carting him up the Hill. Typically, when the cart comes out it’s never a good sign. Andy Reid said that Callaway, “tweaked his knee.” Adding that the training staff would check it out after the team got off the field. It seems that at best you’re looking at a knee sprain. At worst, you’re looking at a full ligament tear.
Reid also confirmed that DeAndre Baker, who was still absent on Thursday, is getting a few rest days following his tibia fracture last season. Willie Gay Jr. (concussion), Alex Okafor (Hamstring), Chad Williams (groin), Mike Remmers (back), Evan Baylis (Ankle), Kyle Long (tibia), and Malik Herring (knee) all remained absent from practice on Thursday.
The team will be back at practice tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. for their last day of work before a rest day on Saturday.
