5 Things the Chiefs Must Do to Beat the Commanders on Monday Night Football

October 23, 2025 by Chiefs Crowd

Arrowhead Nation knows the lights shine brightest on Monday night, and this week’s showdown against the Washington Commanders is no exception. The Chiefs are looking to keep their momentum rolling, but Washington’s physical defense and explosive receivers pose a serious test. Here are five things Kansas City must do to come out on top.

1. Protect Patrick Mahomes

Washington’s front four — led by Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne — can collapse pockets fast. The Chiefs’ offensive line must stay disciplined, especially on stunts and delayed blitzes. Keeping Mahomes upright will allow him to look downfield and dictate tempo rather than play escape artist all night.

2. Get Rashee Rice Involved Early

Rashee Rice has become Mahomes’ steadiest target outside of Travis Kelce when he’s been on the field. Establishing him early forces Washington’s secondary to spread out, opening the middle of the field for Kelce and the backs. Quick slants and bubble screens can help neutralize the Commanders’ pass rush.

3. Reestablish the Run Game

Isiah Pacheco’s energy sets the tone. A balanced attack will keep Washington honest and allow Andy Reid’s playbook to flow. Even if it’s not flashy, a consistent run threat will make those trademark play-action shots more dangerous.

4. Limit Big Plays to Terry McLaurin

McLaurin is Washington’s most dynamic threat — capable of flipping field position in a heartbeat. The secondary must communicate perfectly on deep coverage, especially on double moves. Force Washington to sustain long drives rather than scoring quick-strike touchdowns.

5. Finish Drives with Touchdowns

Field goals won’t cut it under the primetime lights. The Chiefs need to clean up red-zone execution — motion, spacing, and timing must be sharp. Mahomes extending plays shouldn’t be Plan A; crisp route running and timely passes are key.

If Kansas City checks these five boxes, expect the Chiefs to shine under the Monday night spotlight and head home with another statement win.
